[music |The Tension and the Terror, Straylight Run]

A guy wandered into the office, trying to sell print services.

When we told him that no, we didn't need it, since we barely ever print anything, he continued to try and give us a flyer.

When he finally did wander off, he still left one of the flyers on the water cooler.

Recycle bin time!

It takes courage to name your accountancy firm The Tax Haven.

...Mind you, their website practically screams dodgy, saying nothing of the company name, so I guess it balances.

[music |The Heartbreak Moment, Her Space Holiday]

I'm vaguely amused.

A while back, I put in an order at Red Eye for a whole bunch of CDs. Finally, I got sick of waiting for them to show up, and ordered them from the web instead.

Today, amongst my various errands, I headed to Red Eye to get credit back for the CDs I'd found elsewhere.

The guy at the shop was mightily offended. "Don't do that! We have to order them in specially! And we can't cancel that order! And it's really expensive, especially for the imports!"

...I feel a little bad for the guy, but honestly. Dude. I put that order in in April. If you haven't found them already, I doubt you're going to...

...What the?

I just received a "X has invited you to try GMail" email.

From someone I've never heard of.

To a Gmail account.

I'm assuming that it's some shiny new spam form, but I'm trying to work out what advantage they get. I suppose it's a matter of the spam address gets added to the new account's address book, and thus assumed to be safe - so that more spam can be sent to it. But from everything I've seen, no self-respecting spammer uses the same address twice in a row, in case someone blocks it.

In the 'bloody random' category was the guy trying to hit on me at the bus stop this evening.

I don't think he was drunk, which is a plus, I suppose.

I told him my name was 'Em'. It's like 'Mm', but plausible.

[music |You're The Voice, John Farnham]

A few weeks ago, some guy came to the ProgSoc door.

Him: Hi! How's Project Viking?
Chris: ...Ask CK.
Him: Okay. Because I want to get it started again! I can get hold of a blimp to get it up there!
Us: ...Right...

The other day, he returned.

Him: Hi! CK Sent me to fix the email!
Chris: ...The email's fine. But the Internet's down.
Him: Oh. Well, I'll come back on Thursday, and we can talk about it then!

Unsaid:
"You don't even have an account at the moment, let alone sudo access. And we aren't just going to give it to anyone off the street. And Viking has been unofficially abandoned as being more trouble than it's worth, leaving eidolon as a file server."

...Why does my heart sink?

EDIT:

When Dad took it back, apparently his comment was "Yeah; I thought it was a bit rough. But I just assumed it was a first attempt."

When he went back to collect it after the error was corrected, the guy was like, "You're right! It looks much better now!"

...It's beautifully framed, though - and he shouldn't have this problem with On The Terrace.

[music |What Would You Do?, The Living End]

The other day I was wandering around Broadway Shopping Centre, looking for gifts for people. I went and chatted to Lei for a bit. Lei is the Vice-President of E.G.G.; taking that into account, it's unsurprising that he works at the game store.

Lei: Anything I can help you with?
Mm: What should I get Brinton and Will for Christmas? I can spend, like, fifteen bucks each.
Lei: Brinton... Get him anything USB powered.
...For Will... I know this great game, he'd love it! It's a little bit out of your "$15" budget, but still.
Mm: What?
*Lei holds up Master Of Illusion
Mm: ...That's nice. But I'm not spending fifty bucks on Will.
Lei: But he'd really like it!
Mm: But I'm not spending fifty bucks on Will. I didn't even spend fifty bucks on my parents.

I mean, I can see the "Consummate Salesman" thing, that's obvious. But when he said "A little out of your budget", I expected maybe twenty bucks (which I probably could have swung for, if it fit perfectly). But three times the price, plus change? What the Hell?

[music |Why Does The Sun Shine?, They Might Be Giants]

The house at the top of my street has its Christmas lights out in force.

It looks like Las Vegas threw up all over it.

I tried to take a photo of it, but none of them do justice to the sheer effort that these people have put into it.

...On the plus side, I got to play around with long-exposure photography; I haven't got around to that, in the nearly two years I've had the camera. I can make late dusk look like noon! ...Slightly blurry noon, but who's counting?

Now, to dig around in the fridge for something resembling dinner.

[music |Hurt, Johnny Cash]

This morning over breakfast, I was skimming a Strathfield Car Radios catalogue.

One of the gadgets they had on offer was the Sony Ericsson W910i, one of those shiny phones with all the features: bluetooth, camera, and MP3 player. The MP3 player appears to be the focus, especially given the dedicated playback buttons that replace useful things like number keys.

Its other gimmick (and the headline in the catalogue that caught my eye for sheer WTH factor) is the fact that it's motion sensitive. "Shake Control: Shake it to change songs!"

...How is this a good idea?

It would depend on its sensitivity, admittedly, but this strikes me as the sort of thing much more likely to be activated by mistake than by intention. Suddenly needing to run for the bus? Deciding to listen to music on your jog? I could never even prevent myself from hitting the buttons on my Nokia 1100. I stored it in my pocket, and ringing either people from my address book or numbers like 929292929999 was a frequent occurrence, whether I'd locked the beastie or not. This sounds far worse.

Can someone explain their logic to me?

[music |The One On The Right Was On The Left, Johnny Cash]

Hrm.

It was okay. About as stressful as most family holidays (Trying to find middle ground between four people with very different interests was always going to be a resounding failure), but okay.

On the second day, I had some guy ask me if my name was "really" Charlotte. After talking to him for a little longer, I worked out that this was because I was wearing a Good Charlotte tshirt. ...What?

I spent a fair bit of time sketching, which caused both my grandmother and mother to apparently come up with lots of ideas for how I could improve at it; both were offended when I pointed out that I didn't have any real interest in doing so.

Parents had bought a bottle of sherry to drink. We arrived to discover that there were no sherry glasses - which is fair enough; they aren't exactly standard fitout material. So, what to serve it in? They could have had it in standard glasses, I suppose, but I came up with an alternative. So, they wound up drinking their sherry out of ceramic egg cups. Kind of lacks style, though.

I watched Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life. I don't remember laughing, but at least I actually understand a reference or two Dedney's thrown at me over time.

I wound up with a tshirt and a necklace. The tshirt is just the O'Reily's logo. Mum saw a shirt that suited her; unfortunately they were out of her size. We took down the URL for the company; she might search it up, if she thinks of it. The necklace is a pendant of hematite. Which is apparently the birthstone for Aries, but I chose it because it seemed more likely to 'go' with the clothes I wear a lot.
Granny: What's that?
Mm: Hematite. Apparently I'm now an Aries.
Granny: Are you an Aries?
Mm: No.
Granny: Why not? I am!
Mm: ...

On the final night, as we were heading back to the car to drive back to the cabin, the carpark was largely deserted. There were only two cars in the entire car park; both white Outbacks.
Mm: Which car do I choose?
Dad: The one that's ours.

At the airport when we dropped off Granny and Mum for their flight, I wound up purchasing CDs. Three best ofs: Johnny Cash, The Pogues, and Queen. I like each, but not enough to purchase their entire discography.

On the way south, there were occasionally billboards that featured the word Sleep pictured on a can, with the slogan "The only quick fix for fatigue".

I arrived home to discover that the sticker pack I'd asked for had arrived. The guy from Barcode Art sent out a message saying "I'll send out a free sticker pack to the first n people who ask for one." So I did.
...I think I should take it to work; Fabian'd probably get a kick out of stickers that say "Sticker" in barcode font...

[music |Ballad of an Unrequited Self Love Affair, The Ordinary Boys]

In the "slightly bizarre" category for today was this conversation:

*Mm's phone rings
Mm: Hello?
Katie: Hi, Margaret!
Mm: What can I do for you?
Katie: Well, see, Barbara got herself a new computer. And I've been helping her use it. But she can't get it to shut down! And it's Vista, and I've got XP, so I'm not really helping that much.
Mm to phone: I think it's the small button.
Mm to Chris: Shutting down Vista. You try; I've never even touched Vista...
Mm to phone: Here, talk to my friend Chris.
*Mm thrusts the phone at Chris
Chris to phone: Right... Okay. There should be an arrow, with more options... Okay.
Chris to Mm: ...She's on the phone to someone else, telling them what to do?
Mm: Yep.
Chris: ...

Eventually they gave up.

[music |Happy New Year B, Rent]

Slightly bizarre (for certain values of 'bizarre', anyway) things I saw today:

* Three 435 buses along the same stretch of road, heading in the same direction, each with a different destination: Annandale, City, and Leichhardt.
* An email requesting use of the Cisco gear beginning
Respected Sir/Mam,
Request you to please provide us with the lab access on the 31st October. Please find below the required details.

And signed
Request you to please do the needful.
[The guy's name]

* Three Aboriginal beggars within a hundred metres, each asking for a dollar. One of them was there when I passed at 8:45, and still there at 1:00.
* A guy wearing a Livejournal tshirt, followed by a girl wearing one that said "Video Killed The Radio Star"

And now, to an SDP meeting. Joy.

I was checking Wikipedia, looking at the Linux distribution list to see if there were any I wanted to add to my collection of Live CDs.

I don't know which of the selections is more amusing/bemusing/hilarious:

"Tinfoil Hat" Linux?

The Christian Edition of Ubuntu? (Complete with "What would Jesus Download?" toolbar!) - Or, the response to it, Ubuntu Satanic Edition (though this seems to be just a set of themes, rather than a complete build).

Or the Muslim Edition of Ubuntu?

Mm: ... ... ...Okay?

Does anyone know of something requiring people to know the geographical size of Echuca?

There's been a comparitively massive spike of people winding up on the AusCanal page by searching for variations of 'geographical size of echuca' for the past couple of days. Most of them seem to be from Melbourne, with a handful of Sydneysiders and a single person from Perth. Plus the people who haven't set a location.

...Oddly, there was a similar spike, back in mid-May. Also inexplicable.

Anyone got any bright notions?
