| | The Art Of Cooking For Two, Scattered Pearls | ] | I downloaded a compilation of Lucksmiths covers, created by a bunch of bands in the Filipino Indie-Pop scene (judging by the MySpace user name).
Mostly they're pretty good - the songs are recognisable, and the bands put their own spin on them. Occasionally, it seems like they don't really understand the lyrics; case in point, the cover of The Shipwreck Coast, where they seem to pronounce it "the shipwrecked coast", missing that it's a specific place name (despite the song title). Also, the fact that Tali rhymes "pass" and "memoirs" in The Chapter In Your Life Entitled San Francisco, while this guy's pronunciation has a much harder "a" sound for "pass" that makes it impossible.
And now to go do assignments. -Mmaster |

I have the album that that song is from. Sure, the lyrics irritate me, but it's boppy, and catchy, and Chris and I smirk at each other every time we hear it.
The album is titled Fearless. Part of the artist's notes follow (I'm sparing you the creative formatting; you'll thank me) This album is called Fearless, and I guess I'd like to clarify why we chose that as the title. To me, "fearless" is not the absence of fear. It's not being completely unafraid. To me, fearless is having fears. Fearless is having doubts. Lots of them. To me, fearless is living in spite of those things that scare you to death. ...No.
Define:fearless - "without fear"
What you're describing is "brave". Define:brave - "to meet or face courageously"
True, they can be (and sometimes are) used as synonyms (in fact, the dictionary link for 'fearless' suggests 'brave' as a synonym); but the meanings vary. "Brave" implies acknowledgement but dismissal of fear - "Fearless" means that it was never there in the first place.

Jet's Are You Gonna Be My Girl? was the reason I wanted black boots, but I have never found any that I liked (particularly since I can't wear heels).

Mm: Dad asked me why I was listening to Muzak, since the first half of the first song didn't have any vocals. Thing is, it's got too much edge to be Muzak. Mum: Yeah, I was thinking it didn't sound like any Muzak I'd ever heard. You can actually hear it.
But if you want to take that chance then please just let me know I set my glass down on the bar Said "grab your coat let's go" -You And Me, Her Space Holiday (It's actually the wrong album, but who's counting?)

| | Angel Of Harlem, U2 | ] | In a fit of boredom this morning, I did a quick tally of the CDs I own. And the bands' country of origin. I actually own a bunch of other stuff as well, but for purposes of this, I wasn't worrying about soundtracks and stuff, just ones with an identifiable band/artist. I also skipped burnt discs, with the exception of Man Cower, which came that way when I purchased it from the band. However, I did include things like singles and one-track promo discs.
Total CDs in the count: 196 204
Number of Australian artists: 23 24 Number of Australian CDs: 49 50 Australian band with my largest disc count: The Lucksmiths at 12
Number of Canadian artists: 7 Number of Canadian CDs: 13 Canadian band with my largest disc count: The Weakerthans at 3
Number of English artists: 9 12 Number of English CDs: 14 18 English band with my largest disc count: The Beatles at 6 7
Number of Irish artists: 1 Number of Irish CDs: 1 Irish band with my largest disc count: Ash at 1
Number of American artists: 50 52 Number of American CDs: 120 122 American band with my largest disc count: New Found Glory at 10
...Oh dear. Now I'm tempted to go get some more Beatles CDs to offset the USA invasion... *feels guilty* -Mmaster
EDIT: Looking at the Beatles count, it didn't seem quite high enough. So I went back and checked, and discovered that my list was missing a few albums I own. Oops. (Especially since it's supposed to be my list in case anything goes AWOL...) Updated counts have been edited in. |

| | Get It Get It, Scissor Sisters | ] | Hahaha! I win, iTunes! Mine is an evil laugh!
Given I'm running out of space on my iPod, I decided to switch it to "Only sync checked items". I unchecked a bunch of songs, and then went through the playlists and unselected the playlists that contained only unchecked songs.
The next time I plugged my headphones in, I discovered that half the songs I was expecting to be present were not on the gadget. After digging around for a while, I twigged: it only syncs ones that are on the checked playlists, if you choose that option... So all my random songs that aren't actually on playlists because I listen to them by album? They weren't being copied. Sigh. (The way I'd expected it to behave was for it to still copy the songs across if they were checked, but to not have unchecked playlists in the menu.)
So, my solution? To create a Smart Playlist with these rules: * No rule to match * Limit to 10000 items (I only have ~5000 tracks) * Match only checked items * Live updating I called it "Checked", and added it to the ones to be imported. So it acts as the catch-all, to make sure that the files I want transferred actually are.
It's probably obvious, but it made me feel accomplished. :P. -Mmaster
PS: I will probably get one of the larger iPods, eventually; but not right now. Aside from the "random $350 down the drain" thing, they're incompatible with the way Connor's set up at the moment (require XP SP2, and I don't want to download it, along with requiring iTunes 7.4, when I want to leave Connor on version 7.1), and Tristian only has a 40 Gig hard drive. So it'll have to wait till well after I get a new laptop, if/when that happens. |

| [ | music |
| | Bullet With Butterfly Wings, The Smashing Pumpkins | ] | My brother's taste in music as a teenager has influenced my own - but not to any large degree. I have purchased albums that I heard across the hall as I grew up, but only a few that I can think of off hand: (What's The Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Oh, and The Living End's self titled.
My brother used to love The Smashing Pumpkins. I don't know whether he still does, given he doesn't seem to have time to listen to music of late. But still. He even wound up with two copies of The Aeroplane Flies High, because two people gave him it as a gift at the same birthday, or something along those lines.
However, perhaps because he owned more than one of the band's albums, their music never really sunk into my consciousness as much as some of the others. But watching Clerks II, I rediscovered 1979, and realised I knew the song. And remembered at Shaun's birthday party several years ago, where we had this conversation (if you want to call it that): * Shaun has received Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness * Puts on Bullet With Butterfly Wings Music: The world is a vampire... Mm: I know this song! Shaun: Really? Mm: ...Well, just the first line... Music: Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage! Mm: ...And the chorus...
So, the day before yesterday, I was suddenly remembering a bunch of lines from random tracks by the band. Disarm, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, Tonight Tonight, perhaps a few others.
Having discovered that at least the above were included on a best of, I finally purchased it today. It's odd; the album is almost divided into thirds: five tracks that I don't know, five or six tracks that I recognise and know reasonably well, and then the rest of the tracks that I haven't yet listened to (and hence am not yet sure whether they will be familiar or not).
This may simply be that the tracks appear to be in roughly chronological order, and the listed ones were released around 1996 - the last few years of David living at home. After he moved out, there were several years of no interest in music, followed by the (almost inevitable) teeny-bopper phase. Having escaped it, I come back to the music he liked at my age - since I've barely listened to the radio in the last couple of years, it's a little unsurprising, I suppose.
...Man, that was long. Summary: I bought a Smashing Pumpkins best of. Yay! -Mmaster |
