You'll be okay; I'm happy when you're here, but your smile can seem as far away as once upon a time [Jul. 31st, 2008|11:08 pm]

So tiiiired...

But no chance of sleeeep.

I said I'd stop at the end of the second Coke.

So Thomas bought me a third one. Which I finished. Oops.

Maybe I'll go to bed anyway. The later I go to bed, the earlier I wake up, and it's already eleven o'clock.

In other news, tonight was the talk from some guy at ProgSoc on Open Source or something. He seemed to spend a lot of time saying things to the effect of "So. What do you guys think of PostgreSQL?" and expecting this to be enough. I started zoning out when they got into a deep discussion of various virtualisation technologies - it was all very knowledgable, but not really my interest, and certainly not my field. He also went on a moderately long rant about his dislike of MySQL. And Squiz - it's a shame Rob missed that one, though I have a feeling he wouldn't have contributed much beyond "OHGODSYES" or something along those lines.

SHIVERING!

For dinner, we (Noah, Thomas, Nora, John, Jedd, myself) headed to the Lansdowne. Nora did her best 'turtle' impression when people (primarily Jedd) made jokes that she disliked. And I had three Cokes. Oops. I broke Jedd's brain a little by failing at pop culture; yay for me.

In other other news, I have no idea what I'm doing this weekend.

I might wind up doing something with Chris, but he's supposed to be either babysitting his sister and her boyfriend, or going to Ikea to find furniture. Plus he wants to visit Smash on Saturday and "annoy Rob" (assuming he can actually get a hold of Rob - I get the impression there will be a certain level of 'Running around like a headless chicken' involved on Rob's part). But if the "coming down with something" he was complaining of today continues, my bet is he'll be flat out in bed trying to sleep it off.

So. Any bids?

Nothing hurts like nothing at all... [Nov. 2nd, 2007|11:48 pm]

[music |President Of What?, Death Cab For Cutie]

I called up Liz to find out what Justin's drink of choice was. Apparently, it's "Scotch and Coke". So Chris and I went to Liquorland to buy that for him.

Mm: Excuse me, can you tell me what "Scotch" is?
Guy: ...
Mm: ... ...It's my friend's birthday, and we're trying to get him a gift. Apparently, he drinks Scotch.
Guy: Well, they're over here...
Mm: *looks at the $40-$80 bottles* Are there any smaller ones?
Guy: Well, the Jack Daniels is only $30...
Mm: Works for me.

...This is why you don't let non-drinkers attempt to buy alcohol. I related this exchange to my parents, who noted that while JD may be whiskey, it is not Scotch. Okay?

PS: I was also vaguely amused that even after that interchange, they didn't try to card us.

Your job is killing you, faster than a cancer could... [Nov. 21st, 2006|10:47 pm]

[music |Climbing Up The Walls, Radiohead]

You know it kills me to see such a pretty girl so tired
You've got your mother's cheekbones and your father's crooked smile
Forget all those places that you've never really been
And all those situations you somehow found yourself in

I've had this song stuck in my head all day. (The rest of the lyrics)

I'm going to introduce you to a new set of people now: The Trivia Crew, or as Nora terms them, "The Geeks". Nora has a variety of groups of friends, "ProgSoc", "The Girlfriends", probably a few others. This is "The Geeks". ...Note that I'm introducing you to these people primarily to get to a QOTD; but anyway. They've been added to the cast list.

* Nora's best friend/boyfriend, Hagan, does programming-type things at one of the major banks. This evening he was describing it as "Pushing the down arrow a lot".
* Matt works as a keeper at Sydney Wildlife Park. Nora says he looks like Harry Potter (poor guy), but that mostly has to do with his choice of perfectly round glasses. The fact that he turns up in his work shirts leads Nora to yell "Matt's a keeper!" at random intervals.
* Nora claims that Derek looks like the Devil. I don't really see it, but he seems delighted by the description. He's working in basic web development; from what he says, he's also got a handful of other stuff "on the side". Derek is the one that threatens to disown me when we play "What Movies Has Margaret Seen?"
* Glenn is never allowed near the piece of paper for which trivia answers are being written; he has a tendency to trust any drunks in the vicinity who are yelling out answers. When we were asked to identify Puff The Magic Dragon, he wrote "Bob The Kelpie" and refused to let anyone else change it. He is also convinced that Thomas' drink (black sambucca(sp?) and lemonade) has a catchy name: 'Fruit Tingle'. The fact that licorice is not a fruit doesn't seem to phase him on that count.
* Ben also works at the Wildlife Park; though, since he doesn't tend to turn up to trivia in his work shirts, he's less known for it. He's the one that most looks like an actual geek from the selection (not that the others don't) - take that as you will.

As mentioned in Derek's description, every so often, I get everyone in the vicinity to list me films that they expect people to have seen, and I demonstrate how few I've seen.
Mm: Hey CK! What's your favourite film?
CK: Back To The Future.
Mm: Haven't seen it. Second favourite film?
CK: Back To The Future II.
Mm: Haven't seen it. Next?
Ben: Ferris Bueller's Day Off?
Mm: Nup. I own WarGames on DVD though... And Sneakers.
CK: But Sneakers sucked.
Mm: I liked it...
Derek: What films have you seen?
Mm: Joe's Apartment?
Matt: Heh. Joe's Apartment. That's an awesome movie.
CK: HitchHiker's Guide?
Mm: Yes, I've seen that one...
Ben: Titanic?
Mm: Yes.
Derek: I saw Titanic three times.
CK: You what?
Derek: With a different girl each time. A friend had a series of double dates, and I didn't have to pay for the tickets, so...
CK: Wait, so that's a real anecdote? I thought it was just a throwaway line. I saw it when a girl I was hanging out with wanted to watch it on TV. And just when it was getting to the good bit, the impact with the iceberg, she changed the channel - "I can't watch this, I can't watch this!". She already knew what happened.
Derek: Who was waiting for him to fall under the ice?
*Chorus of agreement
Matt: So, from the people who have seen Titanic, who was trying to get into a girl's pants at the time?
*CK, Derek, Hagan, and Matt all sheepishly raise their hands
Nora: *scoldingly* Hagan!

Nora was also horrified by the prizes in the Stacker game.

Crashing now.
