[music |Zombie Pirates In Love, Tom Smith]

Chris and I are heading to Canberra for a four day weekend from Friday.

Since Tysen's living in Canberra at the moment, I figured I'd give him a buzz and see what he's up to. After an email exchange, he promised to call me on Monday night. When he failed to do so (I love how reliable my friends are D:), I finally rang him on Tuesday evening.

Apparently the reason he didn't call was that he was sick and going through a flu-induced haze. His plans for the evening?

Tysen: I'm going to go to the pub and get the germs drunk so that they die!
Mm: ...I don't think it works like that.
Tysen: Shut up! Don't try to use logic on me! Everyone knows scotch is a cure for everything!
Mm: ... *laughs* I've missed you, Tysen. But isn't that a really bad choice for a work night?
Tysen: It's all right, I'll probably be calling in sick tomorrow anyway.

...Yeah, because he best thing for a cold is a hangover. Sigh.

In vaguely related topics, does anyone have any must-see items in Canberra? We're aiming not to schedule the trip too closely, since the idea is to relax rather than go overboard, but ideas don't hurt. The rough list thus far (with varying levels of commitment to attendance):
* Questacon, because Chris has somehow never been
* The National Museum of Australia, because I didn't really get a good look when we were there in Year 10
* The National Gallery
* The National Portrait Gallery
* Parliament House
* The Royal Australian Mint
* The National Carillon
* The National Library
* Old Parliament House
* The National Botanic Gardens
* The War Memorial
* The National Film And Sound Archive
* The National Zoo & Aquarium

The other question is, of course, what of the list is worth doing in 13 degree weather. Fortunately, most of them are inside, at least.

[music |The Love You Save, Michael Jackson]

So, that check list from the other day.

* Bed obtained. Mattress arrives Saturday next week, but at least I'm no longer sleeping on the floor. I even made a snap decision and found a quilt cover and sheets. Unfortunately the quilt cover is actually a queen for my double quilt, but I figure that some extra tuck-in ability wouldn't go astray anyway.
* On The Terrace has been re-glazed and hung. I actually rearranged the pictures as well - the mirror is now located where I can wander up to it and stare blankly - since I'm unable to see my reflection from more than a metre or so away without my glasses. The small pictures have been moved to above the bookcase, as I suggested. Also, I've hung one or two of my other pictures up.
* Stereo re-wired. I have four working speakers again! Hooray for Mum's soldering skills!
* Curtains are yet to be obtained. No-one has had time.

Getting there! Pics once the mattress turns up.

And now to sleep. I'd intended on being in bed before 11, but you can see how well I achieved that aim...

[music |Your Biggest Mistake, New Found Glory]

Things I need to do sometime soon:
* Submit a timesheet to work
* Choose and apply for a phone plan
* Choose and apply for a private health cover plan
* Read up on motorbike licences then go and find out where (and when) courses run
* Do the course and get a bike licence
* Get a scooter
* Improve my sleeping patterns so I don't wake up tired
* My uni homework

[music |Signal The Riflemen, Say Anything]

* Today I bought a $20 laminator. When I plugged it in, it blew the power to half the house. I pulled it out and moved it to a less overloaded circuit. When it had been plugged in for twice the expected time and still hadn't marked itself as 'ready for use', I decided that it was probably faulty and should be taken back.

* I have You Should Lie With Me by Say Anything stuck in my head (which is why I can't sleep). At least it isn't Fabian's ringtone.

* I've been considering getting a motorbike licence and then getting a motorscooter. My parents are less than enthusiastic, but I think they really want me to have some form of vehicle so I stop badgering them to take me places. I haven't made up my mind yet (I haven't done nearly enough research, for starters); but aside from several things that may be major issues (Primarily vision, balance, and visibility, along with the whole "Nothing to protect you if you are in an accident" thing), it would seem to make sense in a lot of ways in place of a car. Admittedly, some of the following is hearsay (or what Liz has told me) - factual accuracy is not guaranteed.
- They're a great deal cheaper to run. And, probably, to purchase in the first place - a quick Google search turned up a fair number of second hand scooters around the $2k mark.
- I wouldn't need to find 120 hours where my parents are willing to sit around with me while I practice.
- I wouldn't be likely to do much freeway driving.
- I wouldn't actually need it that often; I catch public transport most of the places I actually go, but for visiting Chris or doing errands (e.g. I will want to visit Harris Technology some time in the nearish future), a vehicle is a damn sight easier. It's ludicrous that Chris' house is only 15-20 mins away, driving, but the simplest way via public transport is to head into the city then catch a train out again.
- Parking is simpler. The beastie's smaller, for starters.
- More people are getting motorbikes/scooters, so the awareness of other drivers is probably getting higher. Also, availability of rider training is probably increasing.
- I don't have to be the designated driver for my friends if we go out, not that we do very often. But I could spend a bit extra to get a seat-and-a-half, so that if, for example, Chris wants to tag along, he can theoretically jump on the back.
- Scooters don't make nearly as much noise as a motorbike. Though, I actually have a feeling that a properly tuned motorbike wouldn't be half as noisy as most of the ones you hear coming from three streets away - people just want to amp up the sound to make sure they're noticed.
- They have a slower top speed than a motorbike - reducing the chances of accidents, and the chances of serious injury if you are in an accident. Of course, this doesn't account for the behaviour of others on the road - as my father put it, "19 to 25 year old males are invincible". Not that the top speed is likely to be hit very often anyway: most suburban areas top out at 60ish anyway.
- The balance on a scooter is (generally) better than a motorbike, I think - the centre of gravity is lower, and the machine itself is a little wider. My balance isn't great, though, so I'm not sure whether that would be enough.
* The negatives, as I mentioned above, are primarily the greatly increased risk factor over driving a car; particularly in my case, when I don't have great vision or balance in general. I'm not sure of the best countermeasure for those. I'll have to look into it; but as I said, I haven't even made my mind up in the first place, it would just seem to make a lot of sense.

Anyway, it's half past bedtime - and I have work in the morning. Guess it's time to crawl back into bed and see if I actually get some sleep this time.

[music |I Want It All, High School Musical 3]

Things that amuse me:

* Sharpay's personality in the High School Musical series - she is the pseudo villainess in each film, but she learns her lesson in time for the final big cast number. And yet she somehow manages to forget it by the next opportunity.
* Telstra's mobile phone plans. The other carriers have a lower band of $20 or $30 per month, with somewhere between $50 and $150 credit included. Telstra's lower level offers are $10 with zero included credit (and 50c/min call costs?!?), or $20 for $20. Yeah, no.
* Camp Rock. Just because.
* Stevie attempting to peer pressure Chris into coming to see Twilight with us when we go.
* "For my next revolutionary experiment, I will prove neutrinos have mass!"
"Neutrinos have mass? I didn't even know they were Catholic!"

I have a headache. I have a feeling it's some ugly combination of being hot, dehydrated, and overtired. It's shifted from being a stabbing pain in the forehead to a dull ache, now, thankfully. This I'm putting down to my countermeasures of vast quantities of water, two Neurofen, having eaten, and now sitting in a darkened room. I shouldn't really be staring at Bianca's (full-brightness backlit) screen, but I attempted a nap but quickly gave up.

[music |The River Of Dreams, Billy Joel]

Random notes:

* WTF, lady? How do you turn "C-O-L... V for victory... I... Double-L E." into "Colvaooe"?

* WALL-E was cute. Now I want a WALL-E toy, but both Target and KMart had sold out. I'm tempted to do what Rob_Jedi did, and order an iDance WALL-E from the States. He had it hooked up to his iPod, dancing along to You Are A Pirate from Lazy Town.

* Note the song's very loose definition of pirate: "If you love to sail the sea, you are a pirate!". I wonder how the legal shipgoing public feel about this statement? (Mind you, you could argue that anyone who can afford the cash to spend on a boat must be resorting to piracy...)

* Most of the ads for movies before the film seemed to be for Disney films. One of the films advertised was The Tale of Despereaux, which I initially thought was going to be a sequel to Ratatouille, except that the animation style was wrong.

* Cinemas no longer have ads, they have a "Pre-Show Program".

* High School Musical 3 comes out next month. This fills me with mindless and unending glee. And Chris with resignation.

* "So, The Onion isn't a real newspaper, then?" -Chris

* Conceptis Puzzles are way more addictive than is healthy for my sleeping patterns. And it's not like I'm even that good at them, I just can't seem to stop plugging away.

* Stack Overflow is my new "I'm waiting for my code to compile, what's something IT-related I can be reading?" website. Coders might fight it useful, I just find it interesting what bubbles to the top. "I keep reading things telling me how to Unit Test, but nothing tells me what it's for. What is Unit Testing, and why do I care?"

[music |Brand New Day, Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog]

Tidbits:

* I finally said "Stuff it" for the DVD storage, having failed to find anything that matched what I wanted. I went and got a custom order instead. It'll wind up setting me back around $600. Pricier than a lot of things I've seen, but a much better fit - and cheaper than the three grand that the other custom furniture place ($3000 without even including margin? Oh dear.). It should be ready in three weeks or so.

* Chris and Liz have finally (theoretically) found a flat; but they haven't signed anything as yet, just put down a holding deposit. Assuming everything works out, they plan to move this weekend.

* Which means I spend this weekend helping. Woo.

* Steson is back from Japan.

* I'm booking lunchtime on the 6th of September in your schedules for my birthday party. Where it will be held, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm tending towards heading back to the Star City buffet. It has a couple of problems with it, though - mind you, some of those problems I'd have anywhere, so...

* Chris has fallen in love with IKEA.

* IKEA! Just some oak and some pine and a handful of Norsemen!
IKEA! Selling furniture for college kids and divorced men!

* The literal translation of several sentences early in the Latin textbook include "The slave girl pleases Grumio. Grumio pleases the slave girl. Grumio is very happy."

* This keyboard is sticking badly.

* Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is amusing, though I didn't find it as hilarious as the rest of the Internet seems to.

* The EGG SGM is this Friday; I'd intended to attend, but I think I'm going to be busy. Aww. Not that my vote would mean much: I don't know who'd be any good at running the club...

* Can you lend a caring hand to shelter those who need it?
Only have to sign your name, don't even have to read it...

[music |Caravanna, The Lucksmiths]

Mini life updates.

* I'm mostly recovered, though people still wince when I cough.
* My mother has returned from whereever.
* She brought me watercolour pencils. This is good, since Chris broke half of mine and has been unable to find replacements.
* Now I need to go buy a new sketchbook.
* We have the dog back.
* He seems very chirpy to be home.
* We could have had an ultrasound done on him to do some more diagnostics, but Mum decided to save it for "When I'm feeling flush again".
* We have Fabian back at work. It seems he more or less got off the plane and went straight to work. He was planning on taking today slow, but then his boss showed up, so we had a big meeting about what's next and suchlike.
* I have stuff to do at work. This fact is awesome.
* Lots of little people bearing yellow-and-red backpacks have invaded my city. Fortunately, they don't really impede on my day-to-day life, since I more or less go to work, stay there for eight hours, then leave again.
* I managed to find a torrent of the Lucksmiths album I was missing. Which means I've now obtained pretty much everything they've released (except for occasional non-album tracks).
* Now I just need to get the actual CDs for the albums I'm missing.
* I got the new albums by Alkaline Trio and The Offspring. They both sound like each band, but there isn't much to remember. At least, from the couple of listens I've given each thus far. Admittedly, I haven't been giving them my full attention.
* I was praying for it not to rain today, but I don't think I got my wish.
* This sucks, because if it didn't rain today, then the fence can't be replaced tomorrow. Since it is currently held up by being tied to the house with string, and it waves violently in the breeze (or when you close the gate), this is a bad sign.
* It also means no electrician coming (we'll be having a powered gate), which means the light fitting destined for my room remains on the hall table in pieces.
* Did I ever tell you that we finally hung those pictures I'd been rambling about? We did - before Mum went away, even. They look brilliant.
* I've managed to get frames for all the pictures in my room now - except for the ones pinned to the corkboard behind the door. It's amazing how few of those people I still talk to.
* The entire house, particularly the living/dining room, stinks of smoke. Mum left a pot on the stove slightly too long yesterday, and it boiled dry and then burnt. Sigh.

I think that's most of it.

Mummy? Christmas came early, Mummy!

EGG had a ThinkGeek order going. I probably spent the largest amount out of the group - Brinton told me that the total cost of the order was around $1500, and $300 or so of that was mine.

Most of the items arrived today. I went to the Bunker and collected:
* A Broken Image Necklace
* I Don't Work Here tshirt
* I'm Blogging This tshirt
* I never finish anyth tshirt
* Keep Out of Direct Sunlight tshirt
* Smart Mass Thinking Putty
* The Complete Book Of April Fools' Day RFCs book
* The Ultimate Hoodie Microfleece

...I'm still waiting on the PlusDeck 2c, a tape deck for Connor (the bulk of the cost).

Also, a PC Authority magazine arrived in the mail. And the framing of On The Terrace is due to be completed any day now. (Which reminds me, I should nudge them about it - or ask Dad to.)

...I even tidied my room and threw out some old tshirts to make space for the new ones. :D.

[music |Plenty Of Paper, Eisley]

Yesterday was fun. If long, and tiring.

Went to EGGLAN.

Then saw Juno with Chris. My opinion of it more or less lined up with what I've seen the critics say: it's a very good film, but the script occasionally takes the attempts to be 'quirky' a little bit too far.

Went back to EGGLAN. Stole some files off Amy.

Walked from Uni to Town Hall via Darling Harbour, in order to catch a bus to Chatswood.

Arrived just in time to catch the connecting bus.

Hung out at Chris' parents' house while waiting for his sister to get ready.

Gave her a lift to her friend's place, then drove to Hagan's LAN.

Stole a few files, played a few songs on Guitar Hero (I sucked even more than I was expecting to), chatted to people I hadn't seen in a while.

Caught two busses to get home. Got in the door around 12:30. Spent some time clearing out both my portable hard drive and Bianca's hard drive, finally crashed around 1:30.

Was woken up by an SMS at 8:30. Why do I leave my phone next to my speakers?

In other news, Liz has decided that I have a themetune. Mainly because I played it so often that it apparently starts running through her head every time she sees me. Plenty Of Paper by Eisley (Fanvid, but at least you get to hear the version of the song in question - the rest seem to be live versions). She has forbidden me from playing it in her car.

And now for a day where I essentially do it all again:
* Heading in once I have breakfast, have a bath, get dressed
* Stealing the rest of those files off Amy
* Lunch with Matt, then introducing him to Lei
* Hanging out with Matt
* Maybe meeting up with Chris and/or returning to Hagan's LAN.

...Whee... At least this time I'll take Bianca. The extra hard drive space could be handy, if nothing else.

Things to do tomorrow:

* Edit AusCanals (!!!)
* Buy Coke for ProgSoc
* Get cash
* Return antenna
* Lunch with Chris
* Come up with creative lies for Seni, check them with PSExec, then email them
* Visit EGG
* Comedy with Dedney and co. in the evening

Does anyone know a nice freeware program that I can use to rip Macrovision-protected DVDs to AVI? It's probably still questionable from a legal standpoint, but if it makes you feel any better, I do actually own the discs, I just don't want to lug them around everywhere.

I should go to bed. Been waking up at 5:15 the past three nights. Though the last two I've managed to get back to sleep afterwards. Sigh.

Things I can/want to/should do today:

* Prod Chris for being awake till at least seven am. And for sending me an SMS at 5am (or something - the timezone his messages are in confuses me) that almost woke me up (my phone is next to some speakers) except that it was kind of amalgamated into my dream that I was having at the time.
* Do domestic Christmas stuff with parents. Which is related to a general tidy, which is also necessary, but I won't be home for long enough to contribute to that.
* Go to JB Hi-Fi to exchange the gift I got for Rob. I have an idea of what I can get him, but I'm not sure if they'd have it for less than $20.
* Get cash.
* Lunch with work people to celebrate the end of the year and things like that.
* Matt's birthday party mark II.
* Visit E.G.G.
* Take Tristian home.

Sleep would be nice, instead...

[music |Fairytale Of New York, The Pogues featuring Kristy MacColl]

*blinks owlishly at the pre-dawn gloom* Well, since I'm awake.

This week's been one of those that's hectic without too much actually happening. Work from nine to five cuts out a lot of the day; which contributes to the impression, I'm sure.

Tuesday evening was the work Christmas party. I was entertained that out of the ten people at the table, five of them (including myself) knew my father. One of the ten was Grace, who is apparently now studying medicine. I broke Greg's brain when he realised that he'd seen my father in Speedos.

Yesterday, Chris and I went to visit E.G.G.. We'd planned on going to the Lansdowne for dinner, but somehow wound up at Shark Bar instead. Which was nicer than I'd expected, but I was still vaguely irritated that the plans got so thoroughly derailed. Selphie had brought along someone named David, that Chris happened to know from his church.
David: From here on in, I'd prefer to be known as Chris' NPC rather than Selphie's NPC. I know Chris better.
Brinton: David, isn't it?
David: That's better than anybody's NPC.

Brinton, Will, Chris and I discussed what we were going to do with CompSoc. A couple of days ago, the first year president (that clearly signed up for the role with her resume flashing in front of her eyes and no real concept of what the job entailed) sent out a whiny email saying "Fine! No-one's supporting me! I quit!" or words to that effect.
Will: I knew she was going to do that!
Brinton: No duh. You picked some random you took off the street. Did anyone actually know her?
Mm: No. Well, James did, but James doesn't count. You're missing the point, though; we didn't really care who got the position: we just needed a name to fill the space on the page, so that we could re-affiliate.
Brinton: Well, now we've got our puppet president. What are we going to do with the club?
Will: I'll run it. Single-handed, if I have to.

After that conversation, I headed in the general direction of home. I just missed a 438, but there was a 437 fifteen minutes later or something.

The schedule for today? Half day at work (I'm only four hours away from the sixty hours for the fortnight), then some combination of:
* Matt's birthday party
* Delivering Lei's Christmas/birthday gift
* Purchasing some chips or something for the ProgSoc "Christmas Party" (which basically translates to "The normal people turning up and me giving them presents")
* Meeting up with Chris after he gets off work (Probably mid-afternoon, because he's planning on doing an all-nighter, the idiot; we were thinking of doing lunch, but he's got some commitment)
* ProgSoc "Christmas Party"

Fun fun. Now I think I might go start getting ready early for the day; I feel like washing my hair.

[music |Lonely At The Top, The Ordinary Boys]

This may (read: will) be a little disjointed. I don't really feel up to making it cohesive; it's been a long couple of days. I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff (there were some quotes that Thomas wanted me to note down that escaped, if nothing else); but hey, that's what the "Edit" button's for.

Tuesday:
* Church sign at All Souls church: Love your enemies; it messes with their heads
* Bumper sticker that I don't know quite what to make of: "Poverty" is owning a horse
* Work from nine till five. Every time he tells me to do something, I can't, either because it hasn't been set up yet or because I don't know how. Sigh...
* CompSoc AGM. Nobody really wanted a role, but an enthusiastic first year put her hand up for President, and the rest of us more or less fell in line. I wound up with Vice President. Whatever.
* We cleaned out the CompSoc room. With Rob twitching, saying "Stop taking stuff". Except we weren't really taking stuff. Though we did throw out things like the biscuits that were probably at least a year old.
* The bus I caught home claimed it was going to The City. I pointed this out to the driver, and he was bemused, given that the bus was full up.

Wednesday:
* Had a craving for muffins for breakfast, but didn't have time to make them.
* Work from nine till one. Managed to get lost on the way to picking up lunch.
* Headed back to the room, to discover Adam furiously trying to complete re-affiliation for CompSoc. With his blessing, I went through and threw out a bunch of extra stuff; like the expired Microsoft Office trial CDs.
* Cisco newbies dropped by, and waited around expectantly for me to help them; when I didn't, they wandered off again.
* Headed over to the Union with Chris, to drop off the re-affiliation documents for ProgSoc, CompSoc, and UCATSA.
* Ran into SDP teammates, who said something like "Please haave the doc finished by Thursday 6PM".
* Spent the rest of the evening trying to finish off the doc. Borrowed Chris' laptop and Office 2007, because Tristian was being retarded. Enlisted Chris and Brinton's help in coming up with creative lies for the sections I couldn't find content for.

Thursday:
* Baked Wednesday's muffins. Shared a few with Dad, before taking the rest to Uni.
* Spent most of the day in the CompSoc room, attempting to complete IAJ. In between procrastinating. Actually did fairly well; finished around 10:30.
* Watched Thomas and Chris play car crash video games on their laptops. Thomas was in a particularly good mood.
* Visited EGG, briefly, to give away the remaining muffins. Hung around for ten to fifteen minutes, before I took Brinton's hint to go home: "I can't surf 4Chan if people are trying to talk to me!"
* Ended up catching the same bus as my father, who'd gone out to dinner with his work cronies. We discussed my IAJ assignment, and how it felt too simple for something worth sixty percent of a subject.
* Printed out various documents, then crashed.

Today:
* Got to Building 10 around eight thirty, which was just enough time to pick up a few bits and pieces before I had to head over to Building 5.
* Met up with teammates. Discovered that one of the documents was missing a couple of vital appendices. Quickly set them up and saved them... Only to have the files vanish. Like, literally, "You made a change? Fine! I will eat your file!" So, the version we handed in? It doesn't have those vital appendices. Argh!
* Attended the presentation. It was a little more stumbling than the mid-semester one, but still quite acceptable.
* Reviewed another team. They seemed to skip over most of the criteria, and ramble about whatever the Hell they wanted; which didn't help us give them marks.
* Chatted with the team about the review, and handed in my verdict.
* Hurried back to Building 10. Made the necessary grammar edits to my IAJ report, and then headed over to the room to demonstrate my assignment and "Ooh" and "Ahh" over other people's. I was really impressed by Kris' almost production-level product recommender; but I'll probably do my minor on one of the other guys' ones: it had a fair level of polish about it, but still had improvements that could be made (which is more or less what the minor is supposed to cover - "How this could be improved with extra time").
* At three o'clock, sent a flame to Rob saying "You were supposed to be here at two o'clock, you moron", before heading to the ProgSoc room.
* Chris and Will were right behind me. We all needed to go shopping, so I grabbed ProgSoc's cash along with the trolley and luggage straps, and we headed over to Broadway.
* There are far too many birthdays in (/around) November. I ended up buying gifts for:
- Leena (belated, split with Chris)
- Matt (belated)
- Liz (split with Chris)
- Lucy
- Nora (split with Chris)
- Justin (split with Chris)

I tried to get Chris' birthday present, as well, but they didn't have them anywhere. I also bought some chocolates for Andrew, because he deserves them; and some powerboards for ProgSoc, because searching for them had driven me crazy. Once we'd got the rest of it, we headed to Coles to buy drinks.
* Lugged the lot back to the room. By the time I'd sorted out the cash and stuff like that, it was time to head back and watch more IAJ presentations. I dragged Chris along.
* Nora and Hagan demonstrated their Robocode assignment; it was apparently the wrong version of Hagan's code, because it actually locked onto and shot at Nora's bot. The newer version "only shoots hers if it gets in the way".
* We watched a few more presentations, and then headed over to visit EGG. We took a slight detour to the computer lab to show him the Wikipedia page about John Hartigan.
* Hung out at EGG for a while. Chris and I played a few rounds of Super Smash Bros Melee. Two Kirbys was a miserable failure, but did more or less put us onto the same level; especially given how out of practice I am at that game.
* When Nora and Hagan left IAJ, we went with them and Will to dinner. Will was barracking for a Korean place he was a fan of; but after we'd stood in line for something like half an hour, we gave up and went elsewhere.
* We wound up at a Thai place in World Square. I looked at the menu, and just ordered a Coke. The rest had various things.
* The waitress managed to knock my glass of water over me; and kept apologising, even as I told her that it was fine and not to worry about it. Sigh...
* Chris and I headed out around nine o'clock. We walked to George Street, and started walking towards Central so that he could catch a bus to Newtown (he was attending a party this evening as well). However, a 438 pulled up just as I was at a bus stop, so I hopped on.

And that's pretty much the last four days. Feel inspired? Whatever, I'm going to bed.

Rob asked. [Oct. 23rd, 2007|09:29 pm]

[mood | busy]
[music |Sleepy Tigers, XOXO Panda]

Today was marking time.

* Plugging in my computer. It's got twice the RAM of Tristian, but still lags almost as much.
* Setting up an account in my name on it - I booted it up initially, to see some guy's Outlook open, etc
* Installing TortiseSVN, Skype, Delta SQL... Various FireFox extensions... And once he found the discs, Visual Studio and SQL Server.
* Reading the C# coding standards
* In a moment of downtime, sorting out the MSDN discs into a semi-logical order, so they can be found again
* Reading about how the place works
* Lunch - his treat, being my first day
* Setting up an SQL Database on my machine
* Setting up an SVN'd folder on my machine
* Finding information about various documentation tools

...And that more or less took me to five o'clock. Then I went to the ProgSoc room and sorted out the mass of emails that had piled up while I was semi-out-of-the-loop - I'd responded to the quick ones, but the complicated ones had been put aside. Yay for yet another SDP database restructure!

At around seven, I'd finished that. I went with Liz and Rob as they got food, and then Rob and I visited EGG.

Tomorrow's schedule:
* Get in to Uni around 08:00. Drag trolley, folder, and trolley straps with me.
* Head over to work for 09:00. It took me the best part of 25 minutes this morning, which is odd, because it really isn't that far. I suppose I walk slowly, though.
* Leave at 13:00. Take laptop bag.
* Head back to Uni.
* Pick up cheque from Penny, and confirm the second table for trivia.
* SDP team meetup - work on some combination of the Implementation Plan and SC Management doc.
* Buy drinks.
* Start IAJ report.
* Visit EGG.
* Go home.
* Collapse.

So I guess I'd best go have dinner, so I can have a bath, go to sleep, and then wake up at 06:30 tomorrow morning. Whee!

You can breathe, you can breathe now; you can breathe but the air is running out... [Oct. 3rd, 2007|12:47 pm]

[mood | frustrated]
[music |Slipping Into The Airwaves, Jack's Mannequin]

Gah! No motivation!

...Yes, I know that that's fairly standard. But still.

Things I should be doing:
* Writing up SDP tasks
* Probably something else SDP-related, though I've no idea what
* Editing IAJ code to give it the other functionalities it needs
* Writing up IAJ

Things I've done thus far:
* Read the Internet
* Ten minutes worth of SDP, before I stopped in sheer "'Why is this important?' Who cares?"
* Read the Internet
* Talked to Rob
* Read the Internet
* Spent half an hour (or more, I wasn't really keeping count) giving the two different versions of my IAJ assignment logical variable names
* Read the Internet
* Wikifying a few more ProgSoc meeting minutes

Detecting a pattern yet?

To make it worse, I'm developing a boredom headache. *sigh*

Micro tasks. It kind of needs to be done by next week, though. [Sep. 26th, 2007|10:40 pm]

[mood | geeky]
[music |Kids In America, Cascada]

Current mash together version:

* Read in "existing lines" file
* Store "existing lines" as array
* Strip newlines from end of the lines (Is this necessary?)
* Read in new text
* From email
* Strip whitespace and ">"s from the start of the lines
* Strip blank lines from new text
* Check email headers to verify the email is actually destined for the list (extension)
* Strip email headers (extension)
* Strip newlines (and associated) from end of lines
* Search for new lines in existing lines
- If yes, old++
- If no, new++, and add to existing lines array
* Compare new / (new + old)
* Tell the user if they suck or not
* Output existing lines array back to same file (reverse chronological order?)
* Shut up shop

I think I actually know how to do most of that, now, having spent the last two days digging through the first few chapters of a Perl reference guide. Plus having had people's help with various aspects. The headers, I'm still not sure about; but that can wait - polish is way down the priority list.

Random tidbits. [Sep. 19th, 2007|05:19 pm]

[mood | busy]
[music |Only One, The Goo Goo Dolls]

* SDP mid-semester hand-in is due this Friday. *wibbles*

* Seeing The Whitlams (with Sydney Symphony) in concert this Friday. *glee*

* Coles Broadway (and presumably other places; probably BiLo as well, though I didn't check) is selling cheap Coke till Sunday - $9.99 for 24 cans.

* The ProgSoc room is not an answering machine, and neither are the people in it.

* If Nathan complains that the ProgSoc webcam was unplugged (for all of two minutes): it was acting oddly (no refresh on the webpage - and I checked on two different machines), so I power cycle'd it.

* I still have The Goo Goo Dolls and Elmo singing Pride stuck in my head.

* There are guys in my SDP team that don't know what styles are. Including the Documents Coordinator - who was manually re-numbering the requirements every time a change was made to the SRS. *shakes head* So I volunteered to convert the documents to styles. Whee...

* It's Talk Like A Pirate Day. Yarr.

* Rob claimed he was going to be around, but I haven't seen him. Admittedly, I haven't been around the room too much myself today, so he may have been past in the times I was elsewhere.

* My schedule for the next few days:
-Thursday morning: Probably meet up with SDP team mates, help them polish whatever needs it.
-Thursday 12 o'clock: Attend SDP presentation rehearsal.
-Thursday 1 o'clock: Go and try and scam free food from The Union.
-Thursday evening: ProgSoc.
-Friday morning: Probably another SDP presentation rehearsal.
-Friday 10:15: Reviewing another team's SDP presentation.
-Friday 11:45: Giving SDP presentation.
-Friday afternoon: Some combination of "collapse/nap" and "visiting E.G.G"
-Friday evening: The Whitlams concert.
-Saturday morning: Sleep in (hopefully).
-Saturday day: Visit the E.G.G. LAN.
-Saturday night: Doctor Who.
-Sunday morning: Dog training.
-Sunday day: Visit the E.G.G. LAN.
-Sunday evening: Go to Hailey's birthday party.

Yay. Busy.

* Yesterday was Dan's birthday, and I forgot to mention it. Not that he reads this, but sometimes I think I'm the only one who remembers it's on. :P.

* Rob, in case you'd forgotten, the IAJ lecture isn't on this week because the lecturer's in Athens.

I have to leave in just over half an hour, and I want to try and get today's meeting minutes (such as they are) completed, so that I can send them out. So I guess I'd better get to it. *sigh*

Sleep tight, grim rite, we have two hundred couches where you can sleep tonight... [Sep. 3rd, 2007|09:51 am]

[mood | busy]
[music |PDA, Interpol]

To do today:

SDP:
* Write last week's time sheet
* Edit the Existing Data Sources list to include the Sales database
* Type up and format Friday's meeting minutes
* "Compare the UCDD design to the SRS requirements" (Huh?)
* Help build UCDD
* Write task reflections
* SA task Development Process description

IAJ:
* Learn more Perl
* Work on my project (see the aforementioned list)

Misc:
* Drop Mum's frame off to her before lunchtime
* Figure out whether Chris can take a half day tomorrow or something
* Leave before 6:30

Best hop to it, I suppose...

And you know that until the stars fall, I will always love you, I will always love you... [Aug. 21st, 2007|05:49 pm]

[mood | calm]
[music |Marvelous Things, Eisley]

Today was nice. Took it slow, avoided complicated work, regained sanity.

* Read the Internet. Chatted to Nora via MSN about height charts.
* Watched the Doctor Who episode that's been waiting for me to have time.
* Filled out my SDP timesheet.
* Had lunch/breakfast.
* Baked a lemon curd cake. Did the associated washing up.
* Sorted out the container cupboard, that I'd promised my mother I'd do like two weeks ago and hadn't had time.
* Took the dog for a walk. Chatted to the guys that were minding the cafe.
* Came home. Collected the mail.
* Chatted via MSN some more; mostly to James whatever-his-surname-is about The Lucksmiths.
* Printed out various SDP docs, skimmed version 0.9 of the SRS. Someone's a big fan of the word "Furthermore" - starting five paragraphs within two pages with it? And the possessive of "customer" is "customer's", not "customers'"!

Once I've finished with the SRS, I'll do the case study quiz and call it a day on SDP work. ...Even when I'm taking the day off, I can't get away from it; but I feel less bitter about it than I sometimes do.

EDIT:
Shoulder Angel says: So, what are you up to this evening?
Chris says: umm lamenting about going to sleep
Shoulder Angel says: *One eyebrow raised*
Shoulder Angel says: How so?
Chris says: umm well you see you lament.. and then you sleep.. and thats' basically it
Shoulder Angel says: ...
Shoulder Angel says: Definitions of lament on the Web:
* a cry of sorrow and grief; "their pitiful laments could be heard throughout the ward"
Shoulder Angel says: ...
Shoulder Angel says: "Sorrow and grief" about going to sleep? What the Hell kind of dreams are you having?
Chris says: lol.. umm (well the word has many definitions I have you know)
Shoulder Angel says: http://www.google.com.au/search?q=define%3Alament
Pick one? :P

...Now I'm curious as to what he thought it meant...
