The news reports on the dust storm said that normal Sydney levels of pollution are about 10 units (micrograms of particles per cubic metre of air), and that during the dust, it was at 15400 units. And that hazardous levels were about 200.

I'd be interested to see an analysis of the air from the dust storm the other day, compared to what smokers breathe in, in terms of impurity level and hazard to health. No, I'm not a smoker, and never intend to become one, but the comparison would be a good data point for me to see how much damage I did to myself by not bothering to cover my face during it.
