Strange thoughts occur to me when I'm asleep - or even if I'm not, I suppose. Nov. 14th, 2005|06:25 am

Have you ever woken up at what you're perfectly certain was the end of a chapter in your dream?

Until ten minutes ago, I was having some dream where I was a gangster, well deserving of prison. I had shot (and killed) a couple of people with an overlarge gun - which, on closer inspection, ended up being the SNES Super Scope. I left them, once dead, in the nearest bathtub of rapidly cooling water. I had a bunch of gadgets with me, that I had no idea how to operate - and desperately needed to find out. Some guy searched my bag, certain that he would find incriminating evidence, and didn't, because I hadn't packed them in yet - for which I was exceedingly grateful. I rushed back to my room, grabbed what I needed that I could shove into my bag (the Scope was too tall to fit, so I laid it across the top of the pile of stuff I was carrying) and clicked the front door shut behind me. I managed to leave just five minutes before the police busted the door down - either the voiceover that it seemed to be receiving, or the 'flashforwards' that I was getting (so I could pick which way to take the dream - heh) told me so with great certainty.

The dream ended with that moment. Which, if it were a novel, would almost certainly be the end of a chapter - or possibly the end of the novel itself - the character has found security (or at least temporary freedom), they have escaped, and (assuming it's told from the character's point of view) - a certain sense of justice. It doesn't have the cliffhanger that many authors like to place at the end of a chapter, in order to ensure the reader continues - so maybe the novel.

PS: You can probably blame the dream itself on the fact that I've been listening to both Stealers' Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle with You" and Nancy Sinatra's "Baby Shot Me Down (Bang Bang)" on repeat.
